Sonoma Academy seeks Garden Educator

Overview of Position: 
Sonoma Academy is seeking a highly qualified Garden Educator to develop new, and build upon existing, Organic Teaching Garden programs. This is a part-time (24 hours per week), year-round position that has the potential to grow into a full-time position. Compensation is $25/hour with some benefits.  Approximate time period will be Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays 10:00am – 4:00pm.  The position ideally would begin mid-March 2018.
Responsibilities:
  • Expand and improve upon the Organic Teaching Garden Exploratory and Connections programs, in partnership with Dean of Curriculum
  • Work with faculty, staff and students to set goals, develop and lead garden-related programming, special events and community outreach
  • Coordinate the integration of garden programs, and garden produce, with dining services and teaching kitchen-related courses
  • Coordinate the integration of garden programs with diverse and interdisciplinary academic programs
  • Work with students to oversee garden upkeep, maintenance and crop production
  • Teach and support non-academic, Exploratory, Connections, and Intersession courses.
Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 3 years organic gardening or farming experience
  • A minimum of 3 years teaching experience, preferably with high-school aged students
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training required 
  • Self-motivated, cooperative, personable, and empathetic to human needs
  • Ability to complete multiple tasks under fixed time constraints and deadlines
  • Ability to develop a creative vision for the role that food and gardening can play in a community 
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good communication skills, whether in person, by email or on the phone
  • Comfortable seeking assistance when necessary
  • CPR/First aid certification required within the first month of employment
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
  • Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects, weighing 30-50 pounds; may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials weighing up to 100 pounds
  • May work in varied extreme outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Ability to work at a desk and being on foot for several hours
Overview of School:
Founded in 2001, Sonoma Academy (SA) is a dynamic college preparatory high school providing a premier education for 311 motivated learners from Sonoma, Napa, and Marin Counties. The campus is located on a 34-acre site at the foot of Taylor Mountain in southeastern Santa Rosa, approximately one hour north of San Francisco. SA graduates attend public and private colleges all over the U.S and abroad.
