install a Schoolyard Habitat Garden

The School Garden Network is excited to once again offer our Schoolyard Habitat funding to Sonoma County schools. We can provide technical assistance and the materials needed to support 500* square feet of plantings designed to attract native pollinators, hummingbirds and song birds to your school grounds. |

Schoolyard Habitat designs incorporate food, water, shelter, and space in order to attract and provide a home to local wildlife; even a small plot can be landscaped to attract birds, butterflies, beneficial insects, and small animals! A thoughtful selection of plant diversity will bring a plethora of wildlife species to your school yard. Additionally, nesting boxes, feeders, and watering sites can be used to improve and diversify your habitat.
Supplies provided include native plants, mulch, drip irrigation, gopher baskets, and SGN signage. |

Schoolyard Habitat Coordinator, Laurel Anderson, will guide you through the process to ensure a successful project.
In order to qualify, you will need to DO THE following:
Phase 1:
- Create a habitat team that includes school principal, maintenance personnel, classroom teacher and a designated project coordinator.
- Identify 500 sq feet of contiguous space for planting. This can be a hedgerow around your current food garden or a planting space with paths. *
Phase 2:
- Complete INTEREST FORM (deadline is December 31, 2021)
- Agree to provide documentation of the project’s progression; i.e. before and after photos and brief description of the SYH project within 12 months of installation.
- Host a site visit from SYH Project Coordinator (this will be scheduled after the Intake Form is received )
Phase 3:
Once site visit is completed your school will be invited to complete a work plan.
Funding and materials will be provided upon successful completion of work plan.
Work plan will include the following:
- Map of the planting area
- Site assessment
- A ¾” stub up for an irrigation tie-in for the habitat planting area
- Plan that outlines how you will include students with installation
- Overview of how students will use the habitat project
- Planting Plan- (SGN staff or partners will assist with this piece of the project)
- Maintenance Plan
- Attendance at a Schoolyard Habitat Workshop - next one will be Spring 2022
